THE THREE WISE MEN’S PARADE

Friday, 05 January 2018

Inspired by the renowned Christmas procession of Alcoi, València’s Christmas Parade – Cavalcada de Reis (Three Wise Men’s Parade)-, is held on January 5th, the Eve of Epiphany. A celebration of fantasy and dreams, the event is targeted at children, but all members of the family enjoy it. More than 500 people participate in it, with 40 floats marching all around the city centre before a huge audience, until they finally arrive at the Plaça de l’Ajuntament (City Hall Square).

The Three Wise Men arrive in València by sea. They are welcomed by the municipal authorities at the port which is the starting point of the parade. Their royal entourage is structured into several categories. The first one includes three royal messengers who are accompanied by the falleres majors of València and the city’s Municipal Band. They are followed by historic and biblical characters, and these in turn are followed by vehicles loaded with toys, presents, and little treats for children provided by companies, sports organisations, civil groups and council delegations. Floats making reference to Expojove (annual youth and children’s exhibitions) also parade. Last but not least, the Three Kings, who are finally received at the City Hall by the authorities and the fallera major infantil of València.
