Benifaraig
North of València, between the municipalities of Montcada and Alfara del Patriarca, Benifaraig is host to the festivities of Crist Vertader (true Christ). Legend has it that a small image of a crucified Jesus was found by priests at the parish church. Celebrations take place on August 6th with a programme including popular events such as (horse pulling contests), paellas, dances, Valencian pilota, parades, and religious acts.
Benifaraig Festival is held in the summer. Santa Tereseta is one of the patron saints. Little ones are the stars in this festa, with a great many activities organised for them. Candle-making is another traditional activity. The candles are later used in the procession.
The festa of Mary’s Daughters (Filles de Maria) takes place at the end of July, with a programme of religious and leisure activities.
The patron saint of farmers, Isidore the Farm Labourer, is one of the most popular celebrations. Its religious activities include the distribution of stew dishes to the locals, a traditional meal formerly given to the poor.
Benifaraig residents also celebrate the Mare de Déu de l’Assumpció (The Assumption), on August 15th, with its own liturgies and the display of basil plants grown by the neighbours throughout the year.
On July 31st, the village celebrates the festivity of Mary Magdalene, the town’s patron saint, with religious acts. The image of the Saint is transferred to the house where the clavari major lives. The following day before dawn, people sing the traditional Aurora chant.
