WORKSPACES (I). OUTDOORS
The street has always been used as an extension of the Fallas workshop. By expanding out-of-doors, taking advantage of good weather conditions, ninots and larger-volume pieces were taken into the streets during the caulking, papering and painting phases, being left to dry in the sun and open air. They occupied the asphalted streets which were usually reserved for vehicles, as would later occur at the street junctions in town where the fallas monuments were erected.
Fallas erection, called the plantà, was even performed here outside workshops because of their sheer size, which were often too high for test-runs inside the workshop. Two examples of this were the colossal recreation of David by Michelangelo in the falla called En la terra de l’art by Josep Martínez Mollà for the municipal falla of Valencia in 1991, and immense tower called València, Ca la Trava by Manolo García for the municipal falla of 2017, among others.
The main streets of the Ciutat de l’Artista Faller also host the festivities of Guild Fraternity year after year, such as the celebration of their patron saint José Artesano (1 May), the Nit de la Punxà de la Flor (Battle of the Flowers during the Valencia Great Fair) and the Festa del Pi (or “pine festival” at Christmas).
The naming of these streets in this creative space, and the whole of the Ciudad Fallera neighbourhood, is by no means accidental, since all names have something to do with the allegorical figures of the Fallas festival (Parot, Ninot, Foc, Sant Josep Artesà, etc.) and with personalities from the field of art (Amadeu Desfilis, Carmel Roda, Carles Cortina, Vicent Canet, etc.) and the festive side of the Fallas (Emili Camps, Peris Cell, Salvador Cerveró, etc.).
