Massarrojos

Held in mid-July, Massarrojos festivities are organised by the festa commission, made up of different brotherhoods and fraternities. First of all The Immaculate Conception is celebrated, which is organised and publicised by the unmarried young women. The events include a procession which is held on the Sunday before the festa of Mare de Déu d’Agost (The Assumption). Basil plants are transferred to the church, and the day ends with traditional dances. The following day, a music mass is held, followed by a mascletà. In the evening, the image of the Virgin is taken out in a procession surrounded by the clavariesses.

The festa of Abdon and Sennen (the town’s patron saints) is also held at the end of July. After a public announcement, the Saints are transferred to the house of the clavari major at night. The despertà takes place early in the morning the following day, then a mascletà is lit at midday, and an evening mass is held to honour the Saints. Saint Barbara is also celebrated simultaneously. Her image is taken out in a procession at night, accompanied by the band to the clavari major’s home. The next day, after a despertà and the mascletà, a night mass is held.

The Mare de Déu dels Desemparats festival starts on July 31ST with the ringing of bells and a salute. In the evening, there is a dinner, a paella competition and local farm produce is tasted. The first day of August is the great festa. It begins with a despertà. Later on, a mascletà is lit as well. Flowers are offered to the Virgin in the afternoon, followed by a service. A procession with all the brotherhoods brings an end to the celebrations.
